Penalties

It is the policy of the Christchurch City Council, that a 10% penalty be added to any amount of the instalment that has not been paid after the due date and grace period. The Council also acknowledges that the occasional lapse is possible. It is with this in mind that the Council is willing to waive one penalty every two years for residential properties and once every five years for business properties, view the policy (PDF, 155KB, free PDF reader).

To apply for a penalty to be waived you can either download the remission form (PDF, 34KB) enter your details and post it to us, or visit one of our Service Centres to complete a form.

Any request for a penalty to be remitted will be responded to within two weeks of receiving the request. Outstanding rates must be paid before the penalty will be waived.
